Production Blog #2 - We're Dune This

SPOILER WARNING - I'm gonna talk about Dune: Part Two in this post.

So I know I said that March's release was going to be the second episode of Trout Woman, but as we finish art production for that, I had an idea for a quick toon as I was attempting to sleep. I wrote it down and still thought it was kind of funny when I woke up, so I decided to go ahead and make it.

Like most of America, I recently saw Dune: Part Two. Also like most of America, I really f**king liked it. As a fan of the book, I thought it was an incredible adaptation with tons of great visuals, performances, and a much improved pacing over the first film. And while I thought the final mano-a-mano fight between Feyd-Rautha and Paul was great, I couldn't help but giggle when Feyd-Rautha just repeated Paul's line back to him in a smartass tone. Apparently I wasn't the only one who found it amusing, because I saw several TikToks almost immediately that were spoofing this moment. So I decided to do my own spoof after just sort of improvising the conversation with myself.

This short was made in about 16 hours from the time I first opened Adobe Illustrator to the time I clicked "Export" in Adobe Premiere". The animation for this one is incredibly simple, as I didn't have a lot of time to work on this one, and building complex puppet rigs simply wasn't feasible in the time frame I had to work on this. Nevertheless, I enjoyed working on it. Probably my favorite touch is actually the first moment of the short, where we spoof the Sardaukar proverbs that both films open with. I learned how to sortof make semi-passable throat singing sounds when I was in high school, so I just got in front of the mic and made questionable attempts that definitely freaked the cat out, and processed the crap out of them. The short will come out the morning of March 19.
